Heritage Club Launched at English River Secondary School
On Thursday 25th August 2019, students from the English River secondary school packed the school library to attend to the launching of Heritage Club for their secondary school.
A well organised ceremony was on the program of the day which started off with a reflection on Seychellois culture and traditions presented by the coordinator of the Heritage club Mr. Fernand Bonne.
The programme was followed by traditional dances, songs and music performed by the heritage club members themselves.
Ms. Bethilda Philoe, the Deputy Head teacher encouraged the students and others to join the heritage clubs to learn and appreciate the cultural heritage of Seychelles. She expressed that the transmission of traditional knowledge is the link that keep the traditions alive from the old to the new generation. She also thanked the Seychelles Heritage Foundation for having such a program which enable the young generation to connect with their roots and understand their culture. CEO SHF, Benjamine Rose and its staff, Miriam Cesar, acting Senior Education and Communication Officer and Assistant Education and Communication Officer, Ms. Liza Hoareau were also present at the Launching ceremony. Ms. Rose officially launched the heritage clubs and congratulated the 35 Heritage Club members for taking the initiative to join the club and to be involved in learning about their heritage. Ms. Rose went on further to explain that the Heritage Club offers many opportunities for the students to discover the ways of yesteryears and why it is important to value ones culture and identity.
The activity ended with an exhibition by the club members depicting a typical traditional hut and utensils used in the olden days.
