Re-opening of View point kiosk at Venn's Town/Mission Lodge

The whiff of mildly cold breeze overlapped by the foggy capped mountain looking over Venn Town, Sans souci, set the perfect scene this afternoon for the reopening of the Viewpoint Kiosk. The President of the Republic of Seychelles, Mr Wavel Ramkalawan, gave a remarkable speech before a receptive audience - who came in a great number- as he underscored the unswerving commitment of his administration to preserve the Seychellois heritage. In his speech, he also thanked all those who have played a pivotal role to make such a restoration possible under just twenty three days. The ceremony took place in the presence of the Cabinet of Ministers, other dignitaries, some members of the parliament and the general public. The event also showcased the traditional dance of 'Moutya' by local dancers arrayed in colorful attires that symbolically well-represented the unity and resilience felt this afternoon by the crowd that showed up

On the 14th March of 1956, Bishop Makarios, the Cypriot statesman and Greek orthodox prelate (Michael Christedolous Mouskous (1913-1977) and his three compatriots arrived at Mahe on the frigate of Royal Navy. He was sent into exile here by the British government who refused Makarioss request to grant Cyprus its independence. Makarios spent thirteen months in a house at Sans Soucis. He left Seychelles on the 6th of April of 1957.

On the 12th April of 1887, a portion of land of the extent of 80 acres known by the name of the Mare jupe forming part of the island of Ste. Anne was sold by Louis Arthur Duchenne to Guillius Houarea for the sum of six thousand rupees.

On the 2nd October of 1972, the stadium (Stad Popiler) in Victoria was officially opened by Princess Margaret. During the one-week celebrations to mark the bicentenary anniversary of the first arrival of settlers on Mahe (1772). The Princess was accompanied on her visit to Seychelles by her husband, Lord Snowdon. The stadium was built on reclaimed land.

On the 10th August of 1907, the building known as the Government Powder Magazine erected on Government Grounds (La Poudriere) became a Government bonded warehouse for the storage of explosives.

On the 1st June of 1970, as she was leaving Mahe the 62,000-ton oil tanker Ennerdale struck a submerged pinnacle of granite and sank. She was carrying 17,000 tons of diesel and 20,000 tons of furnace fuel oil. The crew escaped unscathed.

On the 1st June 1882, it became lawful for every public cemetery in Seychelles to have a place set apart for the burial of paupers unclaimed by friends or relations.

On the 1st march of 1851, the first Catholic Missionary, Father Leon des Avancher (1825-1879) arrived in Seychelles aboard the brick Josephine Loizeau. The population at that time was around 6,000 inhabitants. He baptised 2500 persons and left Mahe on the 20th of March having been refused permanent residence by the Civil Commissioner Robert William Keat (1814-1873).

On the 30th July of 1948, during Parliamentary Debate in the House of Commons, Mr. H.Wallace asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether the minimum wages rates for men and women employed on land in Seychelles have been increased since 1938, to which Mr. Creech Jones replied that the rate for men had been increased from an average of Rs.8 per month to a minimum of Rs.16 per month, for that of women an average of 3_ rupees per month to a minimum of Rs.8 per month. The price of coconut at that time was Rs.12 per thousand.
